Interesting that here on Amazon the list price is shown as $549 (with a line through the numbers) but the vendor is selling for $648! Go figure????
BTW, the price yesterday (12/15/2009) at Walmart (perhaps not your favorite store?) is only $548, plus Calif sales tax. So save $100 on the price plus another $100+ shipping and go to Walmart.
On the floor (literally, it was sitting on a wooden flat on the floor) at the store - note that the store environment is NOT a home theatre environment - lots of light from multiple sources - and the picture looked great (playing a Blu-Ray DVD movie). I can't imagine that Walmart would pay a highly qualified technician to spend any time to tweak the picture - they just unpack it and plug it in. The DVD player was a Magnavox NB500MG1F which they sell for $78.

Just purchased on Amazon for $549 w/tax+shipping. Fantastic price, good delivery.
I have a 58" Panasonic 1080p plasma and this was for a bedroom. The picture is great -- no complaints. One note is that Amazon's product pictures aren't completely accurate. The inputs on the back are actually on the reverse side of where the picture shows (looking at the TV from the front, they are behind the left side, not the right) -- not a big deal but I had the wires up the wrong side of the wall. Oh well.
Love the picture, the remote is fine (who uses the TV remote these days anyways?), and the TV itself looks much more expensive than it is. Having both a 1080p Plasma and this which is "just" 720p -- seriously, there's no reason to spend extra money to buy a spec that no one but you will ever know about. You just simply can't tell the difference at this size. Stop worrying about it if you're concerned.
Why 4* and not 5*? The sound is as bad as everyone says. My wife made fun of me for playing with the different sound controls (like SRS fake surround) which are pointless when the speakers sound so tinny and cheap. They're tolerable and will have to do for me.
Some may take issue with the number of inputs in the back but I only needed the two HDMI cables (one for the U-Verse box and one for a future DVD player). That combined with the poor speakers might be good motivation to take the money you save on this and get a good receiver for video switching and some decent speakers -- next Christmas, for me.
All in all, it's a steal at Amazon's price when it becomes available again.

I got this TV during the Black Friday sale and I must say, I am overwhelmingly impressed with what Samsung has to offer. Free shipping by Amazon via Pilot was icing on the cake and the shipping was quick and efficient (they even delivered it all the way to my living room of my condo apartment!).
Size:
As a first time HDTV owner, I wanted to buy a HDTV that is larger than my current one (Sony WEGA 22") but smaller than a 46 inch. After testing out several units at Best Buy and Walmart stores, my final TV size was 42" - not too large, but not too small. It was just the right size for an HDTV. It was also the right size for a 720p resolution, as I soon found out firsthand.
Resolution (720p vs. 1080p):
After going through many reviews from several electronic websites, I have come to the conclusion that at 42 inch, the human eye cannot really tell the difference between 720p and 1080p unless you sit within 1 foot away from the TV. 720p simply means a resolution of 1024x768 pixels, whereas 1080p has 1920x1080 pixels. The 'p' stands for progressive scan, which means all pixel rows are lit each time, displaying smoother moving images. Nowadays, cable companies offer HD channels that only broadcast at 720p, so there's really no need to spend the extra money on a 1080p TV.
Plasma vs. LCD (Contrast and Brightness):
The popular demand nowadays is LCD since prices have gone down, but nevertheless the argument still rages on as to which type of display dominates. From what I saw, plasma TVs have a really quick response time (.001ms) as opposed to LCDs, have richer colors, deep blacks and great contrast for movies and sports viewing, whereas LCDs are brighter, but are relatively weaker in terms of displaying a rich, warm color.
This Samsung plasma looks absolutely gorgeous when viewed with an HDMI cable. The images are very rich in contrast, especially with the 2,000,000 to 1 mega contrast ratio. PS3 graphics are also rich in color when used with a HDMI cable.
Anti-burn in Technology:
While it is true that plasmas do suffer from burn-ins, keep in mind that LCDs have their woes as well - suffering from dead pixels. Samsung has did a great job from previous plasma models of reducing burn-ins with 2 features that include pixel shift and pixel scrolling, which moves the pixels at a designated interval (recommended for this TV is 2 horizontal, 2 vertical, every 2 min).
Value:
At $550, this is a really good price for a quality Samsung plasma. If you need more HDMi ports and connections, capability to use Anynet technology for universal remotes, and a headphone jack, you can get all that with a Samsung PN42B450 model for $74 more (currently $624 at Amazon as of this review).
Differences between PN42B400 and PN42B450:
The only difference I've noticed with my Samsung plasma is that there's no PC D-sub port but instead has a HDMI/DVI port for computer connections (where you use a mini-DVI/DVI to HDMI adapter), so that's a plus. Another thing is that PN42B400 does not have a headphone jack, no anti-glare filterbright technology, has no silver decor at the bottom of the SAMSUNG logo, and the volume (+/-) and power buttons are touch sensitive and are in the front of the unit, similar to that of the PN42B450. Compared to the PN42B450 model, this model only has 2 HDMI ports.
Overall, this is a great buy at an affordable price.

We've had this TV for about a week and have no complaints so far. The image is very bright and vibrant along with deep blacks. The sound is great as far as built in speakers go.
We chose plasma because it has a great contrast ratio as well as fast refresh rate for a very affordable price. This is a quality plasma set. It has basically the same picture and sound as the more expensive PN42B450, which has gotten a ton of great reviews on Amazon. On the PN42B450's page check out the discussion "PN42B400 vs PN42B450" for some more info about the differences between these TV's.

I've heard so much hype, especially around this time of year, about all this great television technology - 720p, 1080i, 1080p, LCD, LED, Plasma, 600hz, Wi-Fi... I saw a TV that had a dock for my iPhone! Well, that is all well and good, but in the store, to your average television watcher, the pictures on these flat panel TVs all pretty much look the same. SO my basic factors when looking to purchase a television is SIZE and PRICE.
In comes the Samsung PN42B400 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV. This baby just got delivered today... FOR FREE. This TV was on sale last week for $549 with free shipping. I live in Los Angeles and sales tax is 9.75%, so if I would have hung out around Best Buy or Wal-Mart last week for a deal, I still would have been hit with that merciless tax. So, NO WAITING IN LINE and NO TAX! PLUS, I had about $0.66 left over from an old Amazon.com gift certificate, so that was a bonus! POINT. CLICK. TV DELIVERED in 6 days (it was actually brought into my apartment, unpacked, and set-up on the TV stand that I had waiting - I WASN'T EVEN HOME!!) Easiest. Process. Ever.
The TV's picture is great, right now I just have it hooked up on Component HD cables to an HD cable box. I had a Olevia 32" 720p LCD that is 2 years old that I paid about $700 for, and the picture on the Samsung is noticeably better - and much bigger! I have yet to hook up my Xbox 360 because of the one downside to this TV, it only has 3 inputs - 2 HDMI and 1 Component/Composite shared input. Also the coaxial jack. It would be nice to double that amount for the future, but I'll have all I need once I get a new HDMI cable (My 32" LCD was hooked up via DVI). I'm not hosting any movie premiers in my apartment, so I don't think anyone is going to notice that the resolution on this Samsung is a bit less than that of a similiar TV that sells for $1549 - I'd rather have the $1000. The TV is about 3" deep, so I could definitely put it on the wall if I ever got so motivated - though no time soon I can imagine.
All in all I am quite pleased with this TV is mostly the great deal I feel that I got with it - I guess that is what Black Friday mania is all about, though I actually bought this on November 23rd. So if you want a good TV at a great price - this will do that for you. Make sure you get FREE SHIPPING!!!

I got this TV back in March 2009. Love it, Amazon shipped it fast. Been watching Blu-ray movies on it for a while and OMG!!! the picture quality is amazing for a 720p. I watch a lot of shows and play games on it. This is where I mean watch the burn ins. I was playing a game for a little of an hour and notice when I turned it off that I could see a ghost image still on the black screen. Also me and my wife were watching something on TLC for a while. Well in the bottom right corner there is "TLC" stamped there through the whole show. After it was over, TLC was still there. It has been 4 days and I can still see the TLC logo, and some of my game burn in. Ive done all the burn in options time and time again and it looks like its fading away but still there. I don't regret buying it because it has such a great picture for the price. But when I do buy another TV it will be a LCD. I will talk to Amazon to see what I need to do because I have a protection plan.

Got this TV for our family room for Christmas 2008. Its been in high use since then (PS3 and WII games played by the kids and lots of plain old TV watching). Neither my husband nor I am particularly talented when it comes to dealing with technology issues and we had zero problem setting this up and getting it going on our own. I had been warned about "burn in" from the video games -- but its not been a problem (I did make the kids wait about a month and a half to break it in before hooking up the video games). At the time I paid just under $1000 for it and thought I had gotten a great deal. I was looking today for a smaller flat screen to buy for my mom (who covets our TV) and find that this one is available now for only $730!! What a deal!!! I might have to get another one. I should mention that I purchased it from Amazon last year (they had the best price that I could find anywhere -- even at the last minute holiday sales -- and it came with "white glove" delivery service (they would have set it up if we had wanted them to -- but since we didnt' want it set up they did lug it into the house and help us get it out of the box (they disposed of the packing for us) and safely hidden away. I can't say enough about how easily everything went.

This TV has a good picture, but it's a little dim even with the settings turned up, and there's always that fear of burn-in. I had a logo stuck in the bottom corner for a couple days and it made me wish I'd bought an LCD. It eventually went away, but now I have to keep my settings turned down and I have to constantly worry about what I'm watching. If you have the money, buy a good LCD.

I got this TV to replace my old tube TV. I must say it is possibly the best money I've ever spent.
Picture:
Games look amazing as do blu-ray shows, standard def (more than half of what is viewed though it) looks great too. I do everything from play my xbox 360 on it to watch cartoons and other old DVDs, I have not once yet been disappointed. At this size 720p is almost identical in quality to 1080p so don't sweat the difference.
Settings:
Easy and straight forward, not a maze like other TVs I've used. I paid the extra money at Best Buy to have the guy calibrate it, that was also money well spend. Cartoons (like spongebob) appeared off color until he came in and adjusted it. He actually hooked up equipment that ran real diagnostics to adjust the color well.
Hookups:
This TV has a lot of hookups, I have an XBOX, Wii, blu-ray player and DVD player hooked up with room to spare.
Sound:
This is where most TVs fall short. They are not designed to have excellent sounds since the majority of their users want surround anyways. I would highly recommend getting a sound system with this TV. I initially had my eye on a 52" 1080p tv but decided against it because I wanted a sound system with it. In retrospect I made the right choice.
A few tips for buying an HDTV for the first time:
1. Don't spend it all on the TV. Take into account a surround sound system, a good surge protector (many come with insurance on whatever is plugged into them) and HDMI cables. Also get a warranty, is it worth the extra money to protect your big investment.
2. Get cheap HDMI cables. Digital cables transmit a 0 or a 1 opposed to analog which transmits much more complex signals. This means that the quality of the cord has absolutely no meaning since interference can not happen. So long as there is a connection the worst will work as well as the finest. Places like best buy will try to rip you with this be selling extremely expensive HDMI cables, buy them online in advance.
3. TVs looks smaller in the store, look online for the best inches for your viewing distance.
4. If you are using an old tube TV, THE SWITCH IS WORTH IT!

I purchased this Television in September 2008. I have been using to watch DVDs, play XBox360 games and watch television channels. I use it for about 5 hours each day and have really enjoyed every minute of the high quality picture and sound. Totally recommend it!!
If you are looking for a large television on a budget, this Plasma TV will most definitely work for you. All the rumors about the slow refresh rate are crap. I have been playing all sorts of games on this. Just use it carefully for the first 100 hours and you will enjoy every moment of it from thereon.

My husband and I reserched TVs for about a week before we went out to replace our old DLP. We went with Samsung, because our old tv was a samsung and we had great luck with it. It was a DLP and our bulb lasted almost four years...that's alot!! But we decided to upgrade to a plasma. We struggled between the 1080p and the 720p for a long time, and ultimately went with the 720p. Its been great! No difference whatsoever. Most HD channels only display in 720p anyway, and even if they do display in 1080p...this tv converts its display to 1080p!!! We have had this TV for about a month and we love it. Highly recommended!

We have been very pleased with the performance of this unit. We replaced a SAMSUNG 40 inch with similar hardware and resolution features (now in our bedroom). This product is sleek, thin and looks great on our wall. Don't fall for the hype of 1080 if you don't want to spend the xtra dollars for it. If you plan to go bigger than this 50inch then go 1080! This 720 provides amazing images for gaming, blueray and HDSat channels. Rumors have it that 720 is on its way out, while 1080 will be taking the reigns so take advantage of the lower pricing before its to late.
3 HDMI Ports hasn't bothered me at all. We have all HDMI A/V equipment running into my Yamaha receiver and ONLY one HDMI running into the TV. This still leaves 2 HDMI ports open. To control all of this, we use a Logitech Harmony 1000 remote control unit (that is awesome BTW)
"CONS": Touch of Color only shows with bright light. The color is very very subtle and looks like a dark red wine when bright light is on it. All other times the unit looks like it has a black frame. Ironically the picture color is also very red. I had to bring down the red hue quite a bit.
PROS: Beautiful looking and performing product that SAMSUNG should be proud of producing. I have had many people in the tech industry as guests and they cant believe it is a 720 image. Everyone has been fooled into thinking it was 1080.
PROS#2: Just dicovered at christmas my brother has had the same TV for 4 months and paid 250 more than I did. He has not had any image/performance issues during this time and has a completely different a/v set up.
